I don’t know about you, but my October 2014 was filled with worries and rank fluctuation. All thanks to long-awaited royal entrance of Google’s new twitch called Penguin 3.0.
Unfortunately, to many SEO experts horror, Penguin 3.0 Update grand appearance has not been the only big thing last month that caused turmoil all over the internet.
So let’s go over all the Search Engine Optimization headlines that had influenced your website one way or another last month:
On October 17th the sky turned black and Google slowly rolled out the new, fat refresh. Compared to prior Penguins, this one was welcomed with glee by webmasters that have invested thousands of cash in efforts to clean up the site from naughty backlinks.
While some of us danced with joy, others question Google good intentions and wonder why it took so long for Google to reconsider their cleaning struggles and give some of that ranking back.
Google’s In the News section has not added pre-approved Google resources for news and press release. This is interesting for us, affiliates, because news resources such as Tumblr, Reddit, Stumbleupon, Digg will come up in the results.
Mobile-Friendliness at Check
Since Google works hard to improve the end-user experience, mobile-friendly sites get higher ranking. Get your site working on mobile devices because it might just be the next key signal in search rankings. There is no official confirmation of this yet, however some SEO gurus swear that Google bot is checking this factor deeper and stronger.
Speaking of mobile searches, the recent study reveals that unless you are on the first page of Google search results, you can forget about traffic. Apparently the mobile search traffic goes directly to the first listing and is satisfied! Moreover, it grabs about 27% of click-through compared to the second listing gets just about 9%! Sad but true.
Pirated content reported at DMCA and other signals receive the punishment they deserve with this internet piracy update. Makes you wonder if google really cares about the end-user experience or, instead, tries to please the bigger pockets.

Rumors have it that Matt Cutts absence has been extended until sometime in 2015. The real reason is unknown, but according to Matt himself, he is comfortable leaving his SEO team and with the job they do in his absence.
